General:
Perennial aquatic herb without roots; stems very slender, floating, submerged or creeping along the bottom, up to 25 cm long.
Leaves:
Stem leaves alternate, numerous, 0.3-1 cm long, threadlike, either undivided or with 1-2 segments, the margins glabrous; valve-lidded bladders 1-2, borne on the leaves, 1-2 mm wide, these trap small, aquatic animals; winter buds lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1-3 flowers in lax racemes at the end of stalks; corollas yellow, the spurs broadly cone-shaped but shorter than the lower lips, the lower lips broad, flat, saddle shaped; bracts without ear-like lobes.
Fruits:
Capsules, stalks erect; seeds winged.

Habitat / Range

Lakes and lake edges, and muddy disturbed sites in the lowland zone; infrequent on S Vancouver Island and the Vancouver area; S to most of eastern N America; S America and Africa.
